The best time to visit Beitou hot springs is when it's cold
The water is 40°C in January and 40°C in July. What changes is the air around it, and that changes everything — whether the steam rises, whether the walk uphill is pleasant, and whether you can face sitting in a hot pool at all.
The short answer
November to March, and December to February above all. Cool dry air, heavy steam, and hot water that finally makes sense. Avoid August — hottest, wettest and typhoon season at once — and avoid the Chinese New Year week, when the valley fills and rates rise.

Average maximum temperature and monthly rainfall are Taipei city climate normals. Beitou runs slightly cooler than the city centre and Yangmingshan noticeably so — expect several degrees less at Xiaoyoukeng than the numbers above.
The physics · 02 — why the season is upside down
A hot spring is only as good as the air above it
Nothing about Beitou's water changes with the season. It comes out of the volcano at the same temperature in August as in January, the mineral content is the same, and the pools are held at 37–42°C all year.
What changes is the difference between the water and the air, and that difference is the entire experience.
In winter
Air at 15°C against water at 40°C is a 25-degree gap. You get visible steam rolling off the surface, the cold-then-hot contrast that makes the whole ritual satisfying, and a genuine reason to be in hot water. Getting out is bracing rather than a relief. This is what hot spring bathing is for.
In summer
Air at 30°C and 85% humidity against water at 40°C is a ten-degree gap into an atmosphere that is already saturated. There is no steam because there is nowhere for it to go, no contrast, and no cooling down between soaks because the air will not take your heat. People overheat much faster and enjoy it much less.
This is why Taiwanese hot spring culture is seasonal and why the valley's own restaurants and hotels quietly run their promotions from November. The locals are not being superstitious; they are being accurate.
THE GAP THAT MATTERS
January — air 16.6°C, water 40°C. A 23-degree gap. Heavy steam.
April — air 23.3°C. Sixteen degrees. Pleasant but mild.
August — air 29.5°C and saturated. Ten degrees. No steam, no contrast.
December — air 17.9°C, and 109 mm of rain against August's 327. The season in one line.
The crowds · 03 — the week to avoid, and the hour that fixes everything
When the valley is full
Chinese New Year is the one genuine avoid. It moves between late January and mid-February, the whole country travels, and Beitou is a short trip from Taipei for millions of people. Hotel rates roughly double, private rooms need booking days ahead rather than hours, and the free sights are packed. If your trip lands on it, book everything early and expect to queue.
Weekends, November to March. Saturday afternoon in season is the busiest normal time. Private rooms from about 14:00 onwards genuinely do sell out, which is the one situation in Beitou where booking ahead is about availability rather than price.
Flower season weekends on Yangmingshan — February and March — put traffic on the mountain roads that can turn a bus ride into an hour of standing.
The hour that fixes most of it
Beitou empties in the morning. The free sights open at 09:00 and 10:00 and are quiet until around 11:00; the baths are near-empty until midday. A weekday morning in December is close to having the place to yourself, and it costs exactly the same as a Saturday afternoon.
The other quiet window is late — the last session at a resort, or a private room after 20:00. Beitou at night in winter, walking back down to the station through steam, is the version of this trip people remember.

If you are here in July or August anyway
Most travel sites will tell you every month is a good month, because every month is a month they can sell you something in. We would rather say plainly that June to September is the wrong time for this particular trip, and then be useful about it.
And if you are reading this in August with a ticket already booked: the valley will be quiet, the private rooms will be available at short notice, and nobody will be queueing for the foot baths. That is a real consolation, and it is the honest one.

What is the best month to visit Beitou hot springs?
December, closely followed by January and February. Cold dry air against 40°C water gives you heavy steam and a genuine reason to be in a hot pool. December has the advantage of avoiding the Chinese New Year crowds that hit January or February.
Can you visit Beitou hot springs in summer?
Yes, and it is the weakest time of year for it. July and August average around 30°C with heavy rain and typhoon risk, and a 40°C pool in saturated air offers no contrast and no cooling down. If you are here anyway, book a private room with air conditioning, go in the evening, or head up to Yangmingshan where it is cooler.
Is Beitou busy at Chinese New Year?
Very. It is the one week we would actively avoid — the whole country travels, hotel rates roughly double, and private rooms need booking days ahead. The date moves between late January and mid-February.
Does it matter if it rains in Beitou?
Very little, and in a cool month rain improves it. Drizzle makes the steam heavier and Thermal Valley greener, and outdoor pools are more atmospheric in the wet. Heat is what ruins a Beitou day, not rain.
What is the quietest time to visit Beitou?
Weekday mornings. The free sights open at 09:00 and 10:00 and stay quiet until about 11:00, and the baths are near-empty until midday. A December weekday morning is close to having the valley to yourself at the same price as a Saturday afternoon.
Is the water colder in winter?
No. The source temperature does not change with the season and pools are held at 37–42°C all year. What changes is the air temperature around you, which is what makes winter bathing feel so much better.
When is cherry blossom season near Beitou?
February and March on Yangmingshan, followed by calla lilies at Zhuzihu in March and April. It pairs well with a Beitou soak, but expect heavy weekend traffic on the mountain roads during the flower festivals.
