Beitou day trip itinerary, hour by hour
Beitou is small enough that the whole village fits into a morning, and good enough that people wish they'd given it a day. Below are three plans that actually work — timed against real walking distances, bath opening hours and the Monday closures that catch everyone out.
The short answer
Half a day covers Beitou properly; a full day covers it comfortably. The three-hour plan costs about NT$290 including a public bath and lunch. The full day, with a private room in the afternoon, runs NT$700–1,800 for two. Only add Yangmingshan if you have a clear sky and a guide.

This is the plan for anyone with one free morning in Taipei, and it is genuinely enough. The three free sights — park foot baths, Museum, Thermal Valley — sit within a twelve-minute walk of each other, and none of them needs more than half an hour.
The single decision is where to soak. Nan Fung is three minutes from the station, so it doesn't cost you walking time and works in the rain. If the city's Millennium pool is open when you visit, that's NT$60 instead — bring a swim cap either way, since both enforce it.

Swap in bad weather
Drop Thermal Valley (it's outdoors and the view is steam either way), add thirty minutes to the bath. The Museum, the Library and the bathhouses are all dry.

The Beitou day most people should plan
The half day gives you Beitou. The full day gives you the reason people move here — an afternoon private room when the light comes sideways through the valley, a slow dinner, and the village at eight o'clock when the day-trippers have gone and the steam is the loudest thing on the street.
The structure is the same morning as the half day, then a deliberate pause. Private rooms turn over from around 15:00, which is also when the light is best and the crowds thin out between the lunch and evening rushes.
The afternoon decision
Book a private room (NT$400–1,500 for two, 60–90 minutes) if you want privacy, have tattoos, or are travelling as a couple. Book a resort day pass ($17.15 at Spring City, nine outdoor pools until 22:00) if you want the open-air terraces and don't mind a swimsuit and cap.
Either way, eat afterwards rather than before, and drink more water than feels necessary.

This is the one itinerary you cannot easily build yourself. Yangmingshan sits directly above Beitou, but the connections between its grassland, its fumaroles and its flower terraces are slow rural buses, and a DIY attempt tends to become a day of waiting at stops.
The trade is explicit: you get the volcano, and you lose the soak. Every tour on this route includes a foot bath at Lengshuikeng and a walk past Thermal Valley — but no bathing. Plan a bath after drop-off if the water was the point.
Only book this if
- The forecast is clear. Yangmingshan spends much of winter inside a cloud, and a fumarole you can't see is just a smell.
- You have a full day to give — nine hours, eight stops, a real schedule.
- Walking on uneven volcanic paths is fine for everyone in your party; the operator states the tour is unsuitable for wheelchair users.
The DIY version, honestly
Take the MRT to Beitou, then bus S9 up the mountain, and budget the entire day for two or three sights rather than five. It costs almost nothing and works well in good weather with an early start. The Yangmingshan combination in detail.
Against our own interest — what to leave out
Three things people plan into a Beitou day and shouldn't
A tour of the village itself. Beitou is nine minutes of walking end to end and every free sight has English signage. The four-hour guided village walk exists and has no reviews yet; the same route costs NT$0 and takes ninety minutes at your own pace.
Two paid baths back to back. It sounds efficient and feels awful. Sulfur water at 40°C+ is genuinely draining — one long soak with proper rest cycles beats two rushed ones, and you'll enjoy dinner instead of sleeping through it.
Tamsui on the same afternoon. It's tempting: four stops down the same line, famous sunset. But you'll arrive at Tamsui hot, tired and slightly dehydrated, and rush both. Do Tamsui on a different day, or do it before the bath rather than after.
The pattern is the same each time — Beitou rewards doing less. The best day here has one bath in it, not three, and ends with you sitting somewhere warm doing nothing at all.

Planning a Beitou day trip — straight answers
How long do you need in Beitou?
Three to four hours covers the free sights and one bath comfortably. A full day adds a private room in the afternoon and dinner in the village, which is the version most visitors say they'd repeat. More than a day only makes sense if you're staying in a hot-spring hotel.
Is Beitou a good half-day trip from Taipei?
It's one of the best in the city — thirty minutes each way on the metro, three free sights within a twelve-minute walk, and a bath from NT$60. Budget about NT$290 per person including lunch.

Can I combine Beitou with Tamsui in one day?
You can — they're four stops apart on the red line — but it makes for a rushed, hot day. If you must, do Tamsui first and Beitou second, so the bath is the reward rather than an item on a list.
Can I do Beitou and Yangmingshan in one day?
By tour, comfortably; independently, only with a full day, clear weather and patience for rural buses. The guided version runs 9 hours from $81 and includes both, though the hot spring element is a foot bath rather than a soak.
Is Beitou worth a full day?
For most people yes, if the day includes a private room and dinner. If you're only going to see the free sights and take one public bath, half a day is genuinely enough and you'll enjoy the rest of Taipei more.
